Officials optimistic fight over Ishigaki AP coming to end

Date Posted: 2003-10-03

Prefecture officials are optimistic that the fight over constructing a new airport at Ishigaki is finally coming to end after more than 20 years of often bitter bickering. Airport proponents say that constructing a new airport is vital for the island’s economic future. Opponents say that constructing the new airport would cause irreparable damage to the island’s environment.

Currently, more than 400 of the 522 people who own land at the planned site of the new airport have agreed to sell their land, and officials are optimistic that they can convince the rest who own only 0.1 percent of the needed land area to release the land in the near future. When exactly that day will come is anybody’s guess, but the final construction plans are well under way. “The planning of the project is almost complete, and we can start construction soon,” an official involved in the project at the Prefecture General Bureau said.
