Kirakira Beach triples tourists in single year

Date Posted: 2009-07-09

Nishihara Town officials are patting themselves on the back for developing Nishihara Marine Park and Kirakira Beach into top notch tourism sites.

Operated by Nishihara Town, the marine park and beach were the target of an advertising and marketing campaign two years ago, when 127,000 tourists visited the east coast beach. “We made a big event to bring people here, and it made celebrities of the east coast tourist zone,” says the town office planning section. The town’s work paid off as more than 380,000 tourists visited the Kirakira Beach and Nishihara Marine Park last year.

The success is two-fold, as the community gets lots of recognition, and Nishihara Town prepares to hand the park over to private enterprise. “Our twon management is over the end of this year,” says Nishihara Town Mayor Akira Uema. “We think we did a good job, and we’ll now give this place to private companies to manage.” Nishihara Town says Kirakira Beach has brought lots of visitors and beach volleyball tournaments, and school tourists have also visited.

Nishihara Town says it spent ¥117 million on the park and beach, while raking in profits of ¥180 million. Profits come mostly from barbeque, food and drink sales at the beach, a jump of 57% from two years ago.

Nishihara Marine Park has been developed as a part of the Nakagusuku Harbor Marine Town Project on Nishihara Town’s east coast, and is adjacent to the beach park, where beach volleyball tournaments are now almost commonplace. The park was build on a large landfill off Yonabaru and Nishihara Town.
