Toddler drowns in Nanjo City pond

Date Posted: 2009-07-09

A leisurely Saturday afternoon turned deadly in Nanjo City when a two-year-old boy fell into a pond and drowned.

The youngster had been playing in the residential yard in the city’s Sashiki area, which also had the pond. Shortly after 3 p.m. the boy was noticed missing, and subsequently found floating face up in the pond. “My child has fallen down n the pond and doesn’t breath, and his face is so blue,” the young mother told the Yonabaru Police station in a frantic call. “Please help.” The father, Hayaro Kohatsu, was waiting for police.
Police and rescue workers found the toddler, Taiga, in the pond, which had water only 50cm deep.

Unconscious, the boy was taken to a hospital where he was confirmed dead at 1 a.m. Sunday. Taiga was the 24-year-old father’s only son.

A next door neighbor told officials “this family has always had a happy sound coming from their house. The child had a big laugh, but now we can hear only sad crying from the home.”
