Awase Hyper Mart to get new tenant from March

Date Posted: 2003-01-10

Ever since department store operator Dai-Ei closed its huge shopping mall Hyper Mart in Awase together with most of its other malls in Okinawa on Aug. 30, many local residents have wondered what will happen to the facility.

Now it looks that the mall is getting a second start as Life Association Group, a consumers’ cooperative that operates Coop Okinawa stores at several locations around Okinawa has reportedly signed a lease for the whole first floor of the mall.

According to a Coop Okinawa spokesman, the cooperative saw a good chance to locate in an area that has many young consumers when Dai-Ei announced its intention to close. “We started negotiations almost immediately as we saw it as a real opportunity. We have stores in Yamauchi and Misato within Okinawa City, but Awase is one of the fastest developing areas within the city. I am sure that we can do profitable business here,” the spokesman said.

Hyper Mart has four floors with parking on two top floors and on the roof. Although Coop Okinawa takes only the first floor, a spokesman of Dai-Ei Group, the owner of the building said that there’s a good chance that more tenants will follow as Coop Okinawa store is sure to draw plenty of customers to the facility.
