Okinawa registers first swine flu case

Date Posted: 2009-07-02

A Japanese man living in Australia but vacationing in Okinawa is the island’s first recorded case of H1N1 influenza, the flu everyone’s commonly referring to as swine flu.

The 27-year-old arrived from Australia on a flight through Taiwan on June 26th, and began feeling sick even before he had an opportunity to go out from his hotel and explore Okinawa. Medical authorities say the man contracted a high fever immediately upon arrival, and after it didn’t go away, his friends took him to a doctor on Monday.

Prefecture Welfare health Section officials say “this patient was infected in Australia, and there’s no worry about secondary infection because he didn’t go out.” Still, Prefecture officials say they’re checking the health of the man’s friends, and asking hotel workers to keep an eye out for any abnormal health complaints.

Okinawa’s governor, Hirokazu Nakaima, is urging everyone to remain calm, and not let the case become a problem. “This new influenza virus is not so strong,” the governor says, “and patients are feeling mild and not heavy cases. The medicine Tamiflu is effective to this new influenza, so don’t panic, just take it easy and take good care of yourself.”
