Kadena, Manza ready for dragon boat races

Date Posted: 2009-06-25

The Haarii kicks into action Sunday at two Okinawa locations as homage is paid to fishermenís safety and a call for big catches this summer.

Haari, the dragon boat races, are on tap at the Kadena Fishing Port, and also at ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort. The 22nd Kadena Haarii begins at 10 a.m. Sunday, continuing the summer tradition of giving thanks to the sea god and praying for safety and prosperity of fishermen. The event is free and open to the public. The Kadena Haarii is sponsored by the Kadena Fisheries Cooperative Association.

The 26th Manza Haari Festival is also scheduled for Sunday, with boats taking to the water in mid-morning. Specific information about the resortís festival is available from Manza Beach Resort, (098) 966-1211.

Another pair of special events this weekend are the 32nd Zamami Yacht Race and the 10th Sabani Sailing Race, a competition of small boats from Furuzamami Beach on Zamami Island to Naha Port.

The yacht race Saturday is a 38-mile yacht sprint from Ginowan Port Marina to Zamami Port. Participants from across Japan will race. The Sabani Sailing Race on Sunday begins at 8 a.m. at Furuzamami Beach. The 21.8 mile race to Naha Port is expected to end about 3 p.m.

The next dragon boat races are the 2nd Tomigusuku Haarii July 25th and 26th, and the 31st Nago City Mayorís Cup Haarii on August 2nd.
