English teachers busted on drug charges

Date Posted: 2009-06-25

Two American school teachers are under arrest on charges of smuggling drugs into Japan, but they’re claiming innocence on grounds they didn’t know the drugs were illegal.

Kristin Zodrow, a 23-year-old teacher at an Itoman junior high school, and 22-year-old Ashley Lawrence, a teacher at Naha International High School, have been charged with smuggling Mind Candy into the country. The pair admit making the purchase, but say “Yes, we did order the Mind Candy from England through the internet. We didn’t know Mind Candy is illegeal to bring to Japan and we didn’t know it is a drug.”

Officials say the Mind Candy was discovered at Tokyo Narita Airport Customs Office in April, when officials examined a thick envelope and discovered more than 44 pills inside the envelope addressed to the girls in Okinawa. Tokyo Customs sent the envelope to the Okinawa District Customs Office, where subsequent investigation determined the pills to be Mind Candy.

Students at the two schools where the American girls taught are expressing surprise at the arrests. A Board of Education official says it is shocked at the arrests.
