Father charged with beating young son

Date Posted: 2009-06-25

A young Ishigaki City boy is hospitalized in critical condition with massive head injuries police say were inflicted by his father.

The 29-year-old father is in jail, charged with child abuse in the case of his three-year-old son. The son, police say, remains unconscious with cerebral contusions and subarachnoid hemorrhage. The boy, who had been living in the Okawa area of Ishigaki City with his mother and two sisters, as well as his construction worker father, was taken to the hospital last Friday by the father, who told doctors “My son fell down and hit his head while playing.”

Doctors examining the youngster didn’t buy the story, and called the Children’s Care Council Center. The Center then called Yaeyama Police to launch an investigation. The case, it turned out, was anything but simple. The boy had been found walking the street back in May, and a woman observed him with facial injuries and blue bruises across his body.

The 56-year-old woman took the boy to police, who asked him what happened to his face. “My father beat me,” he told both the woman and the police. Police called the Okinawa Prefectural Child Care Council Center, Yaeyama Branch, for help. When the father arrived, though, he told authorities “No, we don’t abuse the child at all,” and the council had no choice but to let the boy go home with his father.

Police and the Council Center now say they’ve no doubts; the boy has been being abused by his father. An investigation continues.
