Salsa and jazz festival set for Torii BeachDate Posted: 2009-06-18 ![]() With its annual Torii Beach Jazz & Salsa Festival ready to kick off tomorrow, the Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation folks say “absolutely nothing more.” The two-day festival kicks off at 5 p.m. tomorrow with an evening of salsa, followed on Saturday with a half-dozen jazz groups performing on the beach. Despite the rains, MWR organizers say the event is going on Friday and Saturday, but note there’s a set of rain dates, June 27th and 28th, if the weather worsens. For now though, it’s a ‘go’ for the event on Torii Beach featuring Okinawa’s finest musicians. Spice kicks it off tomorrow at 5 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by Kachimba 1551 for an evening of salsa music. Plenty of food, beer and wine will be available. Organizers remind everyone that no personal alcoholic beverages, food, glass, pets or canopies will be permitted on Torii Beach. Saturday’s lineup is the Masao Miyasato Trio + One at 5 p.m., the Ryusei Arakaki Trio + One at 6 p.m., and the Guwa Band at 7 p.m. Shoei Uehara Swing Quartet + One performs at 8 p.m., the Dixie Seven at 9 p.m., and OJA Jazz Orchestra closes the festival with its 10 p.m. on stage performance. The Torii Beach Jazz and Salsa Festival is sponsored by YYY Club, Ie Resort and Army MWR, with support from the Okinawa Jazz Association and Kachimba 1551. |
