Combined waste treatment facility plans abandoned

Date Posted: 2009-06-18

The ‘not-in-my-backyard’ syndrome has dealt the death knoll to plans for a joint waste treatment plant to serve six southern Okinawa communities.

The decision by Haebaru Town, Yonabaru Town, Nanjou City, Yaese Town, Tomishiro City and Itoman City comes only weeks after a May 18th meeting of the mayors to discuss the joint facility aat their Southern Clean Center Promotion Committee. Committee chairman Kunio Furugen, Yonabaru Town’s mayor, made the announcement that the project was dead. The municipalities, Furugen said all agreed “The plan which goes to build the facility on reclamation land is the best way to build the facility, and we know it’s a cheap way to build.”

At the same time, Furugen said “Residents who would use the plant don’t want the garbage treatment plant near their homes. He asked fellow mayors “Who wants to bring the garbage place near their homes? Nobody.”
Since the project was launched more than ten years ago, more than ¥400 million has already been spent. Given the mayors’ action this week, Furugen says the plan has changed to not having one. When a new plan will come up, he says, nobody knows yet.
