JMSDF sailor nabbed for attempted rape

Date Posted: 2009-06-18

A mainland Japanese man visiting Okinawa aboard the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force convoy ship ‘Asayuki’ is in an Uruma City jail, charged with an attempted rape of a local woman.

Uruma City Police identify the JMSDF man as Kenichiro Hori, stationed at the SDF base in Sasebo. They say Kenichiro Hori was drunk at the time he was arrested and charged with trying to rape a woman he met in Okinawa City. Hori had left his ship at White Beach and gone to town to drink. After drinking together, Hori rode with the woman in her daiko-taxi to his hotel. Once there, police say, she got out of the taxi and Hori grabbed her and tried to rape her.

As she was screaming “Help Me”, two witnesses approached and grabbed him, and held him until police came. Hori has told police “I don’t remember anything at all.” The 23-year-old Hori’s boss went to the jail, and told police “the scandal is under investigation, but if it is true, I express my heartfelt regret that he did what he did.” The officer promised to give his Navy men “more advice on rigid attitudes.”
