Fake coins found in vending machines in Kadena

Date Posted: 2003-10-03

A vending machine operator discovered 72 face coins in his vending machines in Yara Athletic Park in Kadena Town that were used to get an equal amount of real 100-yen coins from the machines. Kadena Police say the fakes were made of U.S. five-cent coins that were flattened and polished to the size of Japanese 100-yen coins. The culprits had inserted the face coins into the machine and then pushed return lever instead of purchasing goods and received real coins in return.

According to the vending machine operator, they had found 54 similar fake coins over the past month at other locations in Kadena Town. Another 59 were found in vending machines in Yomitan Village on Monday. Kadena Police are investigating.
