Okinawa Prefecture cops raid Nakagusuku Village offices

Date Posted: 2009-06-04

Okinawa Prefecture Police investigating allegations of bid-rigging involving Nakagusuku Village have extended the investigation to village offices, where they seized 80 boxes of documents they believe may shed light on the scandal.

A construction company president has already been arrested in connection with the bid-rigging. Prefecture Police gave the village advance notice of their raid, and Nakagusuku Village Mayor Kyosuke Hamada told the staff to “work as on a normal day; you don’t have to worry about it.” A team of 20 law enforcement personnel went to the village’s bidding section and checked all documents and files, taking some.

The village urban construction office closed the section during the police investigation, denying residents access. Villagers are asking ‘why did it happen?’ and telling the mayor “the scandal should be made clear to us.” Even village staff were confused as to what was happening. “Why was this visit?” asked one, while another questioned “why are they investigating our office. Most of the village people don’t even know about this.”
