China Air Lines cancels one daily Naha flight

Date Posted: 2009-06-03

Significant declines in passenger reservations has led China Air Lines to cancel one of its two daily Taipei-Naha flights during the first week of June.
China Air Lines officials say only 327 passengers are booked on the June 1st ~ 7th flights, and that the airline will consolidate those reservations onto the single daily flight. “I’m sorry to trouble the passengers,” says Okinawa’s branch director for the airline. He says “China Air Lines is cutting about 150 flights to Japanese destinations.”
The Taiwan-Naha route served 158,288 passengers in 2006, but saw the number plummet to 79,900 in 2008. The airline says 2008 bookings dropped another 20% from the previous year. Officials attribute the decline to the world economic crisis and, more recently, fears of the new influenza virus.
