New Umizora restaurant is a Yomitan beacon

Date Posted: 2009-05-30

It’s more than a bar, and not a simple Izakaya. Yomitan’s newest dining establishment is Beach House Umizora, and it packs an authentic mainland Japanese cuisine.

Beach House Umizora is elegantly simple by design, warmly decorated and lit to permit the accent to be on the food while customers relax. Owners Seiji and Kyoko Yoshida brought 20 years experience to Okinawa from Tokyo to establish Umizora, and chose Yomitan as the locale based upon the belief that leisure activities at the nearby Ryukyu Glass Museum, the Ryukyu Village, Cape Zampa and famous Resort Hotel Alivila would attract patrons clamoring for a genuine Japanese meal.

Seiji Yoshida has spent 20 years in the kitchen perfecting his culinary skills, much of it with the Hotel Grand Palace Tokyo. He embraces the power of fresh ingredients, and shops daily for the best meats, seafood, fruits and vegetables available. Seasonal Okinawan products are mainstays to his cuisine, as are fish from Hokkaido, but as with other foods, freshness is the key. Wife Kyoko is instrumental in handling the business side of operations, herself a hospitality industry veteran who worked in the same Tokyo hotel as her husband.

Open since March 3rd, Beach House Umizora prides itself on ‘Daily Recommendations’ that are truly today-only. Heading the daily menu is Wafu-Chahan, a fried rice with small dried shrimp, omelets with fried chicken rice, and So-min Chanpuru Okinawan-style fried noodles and vegetables. Yoshida also offers Set Tempura menus that include assorted tempura appetizers, salad, rice and dessert. The best of seasonal vegetables are at the heart of Umizora’s tempura.

A full complement of beverages are available at Beach House Umizora, something to accompany every dish. Kyoko Yoshida says there are beers from Orion, Kirin and Asahi, as well as awamori, Japanese plum wine, Apricot and Raichi. Whiskey and wines are also served.

Beach House Umizora is open daily except Monday, 5 p.m. ~ 11 p.m. Private parties are available for groups. Reservations are accepted at (098) 958-5881. More about Umizora is available at http://www.umizora.net.

To reach Beach House Umizora, travel Route 58 north to Iramina Intersection and turn on Route 6. After passing Torii Station on the left, look for the MaxValu and Izakaya Kita Daichi on the right and Family Mart on the left. Umizora is close to Kitadaichi, You could find Umizora banner on the second floor of You-Plaza, right after turn left at T junction in front of Kitadaichi. It’s about a 15-minute drive from Iramina Intersection. 10% discount ticket is available with this week’s advertisement.
