Mika Miyazato hangs on for fourth-place finish

Date Posted: 2009-05-28

Rookie Mika Miyazato held a piece of the LPGA Corning Classic lead in her hand on Saturday, but couldn’t hold on, settling for her best tournament finish ever, fourth place.

The Okinawa 19-year-old had fired a 10-unde-par 69 on Saturday to tie Kang Soo Yun of South Korea at 17-under 199. Yani Tseng, a 20-year-old Taiwanese, was one stroke back. Miyazato reeled off eight birdies and an eagle, going bogey-free in the round. Kang kept Miyazato from an outright lead when she sank a 15-foot birdie on the 18th hole.

Yani Tseng bounced back Sunday to win the LPGA Corning Classic in its final year at Corning Country Club, outdistancing Miyazato, who finished with a two-under-par 70 and a 19-under-269 for the tournament. Miyazato finished two shots behind Tseng. “It’s disappointing to miss out on the title,” she lamented, but noted “I had a very good experience. Although I didn’t play well, it’s a confidence boost.”

Okinawa’s Ai Miyazato was in the hunt, too, finishing in a four-way tie for fifth with a 17-under score. Momoko Ueda wound up with a 67 and a share of 26th place with Michelle Wie.
