Military spouse busted on two drug charges

Date Posted: 2009-05-28

The husband of a U.S. Navy sailor stationed on Okinawa is in Japanese police custody, charged with a pair of drug possession and smuggling charges.

The 39-year-old military dependent, Robert Van Pinkerton, is being held by Okinawa police, who believe he was smuggling marijuana. An Okinawa Prefectural Police official says Van Pinkerton is believed to have coordinated the purchase of marijuana from a friend in Kentucky, then shipped it to his military postal address here. The incident was detected at Narita International Airport, where Japanese customs officials tagged the marijuana in a package arriving late last month.

Van Pinkertonís wife picked up the package, which was then being tracked by police, at the Camp Foster Post Office. Told the package belonged to her husband, police escorted her to their residence in Chatan, where officers found a small amount of marijuana on a bookshelf. Van Pinkerton was arrested for possession of marijuana. When the package was opened, police filed additional charges for reportedly smuggling more than one ounce of marijuana and more than 1.1 ounce of cannabis resin found inside a shampoo bottle.

The U.S. military has declined comment in the case because thereís an ongoing investigation.
