Former world leaders set to attend Shimpo seminar

A bevy of former world leaders is scheduled to appear on Okinawa later this Fall. The Globalization Forum 2003 Seminar is set for Nov. 11 in Naha, as Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper celebrating its 110th anniversary. World luminaries participating in the forum, which will discuss world social and economic issues, include former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachov, former Prime Minister of China Li Peng, former American Presidential Security Adviser Zbigniew Brezinsky, former South Korean President Kim Dae Jung and former Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto.

The venue for the debate is Naha City Civil Hall, with 1,000 public participants to be selected by a lottery. The seminar theme is “The Security and Democracy in the Era of Globalization.” The topics will include how to unite the world against the threat of terrorism, the impact of the war in Iraq and why is there so much opposition agains globalization.

In 2001, the “Forum of Asian Peace and Security” was held in Tokyo for the first time. A similar forum was held in Moscow last year. The Shimpo forum will be the third in the series. The organizers say that as Okinawa is known the world over for its devotion for peace and security it’s natural that the forum is organized here this time.

“Since the G8 Summit in Okinawa in 2000, there are many citizens’ groups here that have been very active in promoting world peace and social issues, and people of the world know it. That’s why it is very appropriate to organize the forum here,” Ruykyu Shimpo President Akiya Miyazato said announcing the forum on Sep. 26th.
