Marine indicted for alleged attempted drug store robbery

The Naha District Court has indicted a 30-year-old U.S. Marine on attempted extortion and trespassing charges in the wake of a failed drug store robbery attempt in Okinawa City.

The court says Corporal Anthony Francis Massimo walked into an Okinawa City pharmacy on April 20th about 10:15 p.m., intimidating the druggist by pretending to have a gun inside his coat pocket and demanding $20. Court documents charge that Massimino abandoned the robbery attempt after seeing a store clerk calling police. The pharmacist chased the Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Force Logistics Group Marine, wrote down his license number and passed it to police.

Police apprehended the Marine within minutes. Massimino confessed to the attempted robbery, but the court downgraded to charges to attempted extortion and trespassing because no gun was found The maximum sentence for attempted extortion is five years. The trespassing charge was filed because Massimino had made no attempt to purchase anything at the drug store.

Hes being held at the Naha Detention Center pending trial. His attorney, Toshimitsu Takaesu, says hes optimistic his client could receive a suspended sentence.
