Itís official: rainy season is now upon Okinawa

Date Posted: 2009-05-21

The annual rainy season is now officially underway in Okinawa, ten days later than usual but still earlier than a year ago.

Japanís Meteorological Agency says the season started Monday, four days earlier than last year. Itís eight days later on Amami Island. The rainy season is projected to last until June 23rd in Okinawa and until June 28th on Amami.

With reservoirs dipping to levels of concern to local officials, nobodyís really complaining. Thereís been little rain since late April, and officials expect the rainy season to boost water supplies and give agriculture a much-needed break.

Nahaís reported only 11mm of rain since April 22nd, only seven percent of what it receives in an average year. The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory predicts cloudy skies or rain for most of the coming week. It has also called on farmers to manage carefully their water use.
