Area peace marches attract few followers

Date Posted: 2009-05-21

A three-day Peace Action 2009 drew fewer than 2,000 participants as activists walked at several points on the island to protest American military presence.

The May 15th march saw demonstrators trekking from Nago City’s Henoko area to Camp Hansen, lobbying against Camp Hansen as they shouted “We are not forgiving the making of a new base. The protesters walked three separate courses on the 16th, including 500 people walking 16.7km from Kadena Air Base Gate 1 to Gate Two Street and to Gate 3.

Central District Labor Association Chairman Katsuo Makishi rallied his protesters, telling them at the Kadena Road Station “Nowadays planes go to Iraq from this base. We have to remember about the time Okinawa reverted to Japan.” Another group of 800 walked from the Okinawa City Offices to Kadena Track & Field Stadium, chanting “Let’s stop them from making a new base on Okinawa.”

A southern course from Itoman City Memorial Park to Yaese Town and Nanjo City Community Hall and Haebaru Army Hospital trench attracted 100. A general meeting was held at Ginowan City Kaihin Park’s outdoor theater on Sunday.
