Police still trying to identify dead baby

Date Posted: 2009-05-14

It’s been nearly two weeks since a man walking along an embankment in Itoman City spotted a baby’s body floating in the water a few meters offshore.

Police today say they’re no closer to solving the mystery of who the female infant is. Local residents have been flocking to the site where the naked body was found, leaving flowers and wreaths, and lighting candles while appealing for the baby’s mother to come forward and claim her child.

Fliers were circulated during Golden Week, handed out to visitors to the beach and Memorial Peace Park, hoping for an identification. Police have also been checking for any missing or pregnant women. Thus far, they’ve learned little, except from a potential witness who told them “I saw a young girl two days before the scandal.”

Police are working with the witness to create a composite picture of the young girl, who the witness said was seen “calling on a cell phone near the spot” where the baby’s body was found. The Okinawa Prefecture Police have added the information and sketch to its home page, asking for help.
