Challengers unable to rattle local gal for Salonpas Cup

Date Posted: 2009-05-14

Shinobu Moromizato was a determined young lady as she fought off challenges from three competitors to win the World Ladies Golf Championship Salonpas Cup in Tsukubamirai in Ibaraki Prefecture.

The 22-year-old Okinawan led the competition by one stroke as she approached the par-4 18th hole, parring the hole to finish the day at 3-under 69 and a championship total of 13 under par 275. Paula Creamer, Akiko Fukushima and Jeon Mi Jeong each took a stab at unseating Moromizato. Creamer and South Korea’s Jeon Mi Jeong settled for second on the Ibaraki Golf Club West Course.

Moromizato attributes her calmness to the fact “other contenders were playing well, and that helped me concentrate on each shot.” It was Moromizato’s second major golf title, giving her more confidence. “Now, she says, “I’ve gotten strong mentally, and I feel like I can deal better in tough situations.”
