Arrest made in beating death of homeless man

Date Posted: 2009-05-14

Police have the man in custody they say killed a homeless man under a bridge in the Kyohara Town district more than a week ago.

The unidentified assailant is being charged with murder. Police say the man bludgeoned to death a fellow homeless man April 3rd using a 1.5 meter long piece of wood found at the crime scene. They say the man, who had a knife in his possession when arrested, has admitted to the killing.

A 113-man police task force had been coming the area near the bridge on Highway 329, searching for clues into who killed 56-year-old Tsutomu Takamoto. Witnesses said Takamoto had been drinking with a half-dozen other homeless men in the hours prior to his murder. Police were tipped to the crime by an anonymous telephone call. They say the man they’re now holding had also been drinking with the victim.

Many homeless people have sought refuge under the bridge over the past dozen years. The murder victim has been described as a ‘regular’ in the area, and others living under the bridge said he was disabled, and a kind person.
