Date Posted: 2009-04-23

Michael Anderson of Australia held on to win the Miyakojima All Japan Strongman Triathlon Sunday, outlasting Shinyuki Matsumaru of Ibaraki Prefecture by 2 minutes, 49 seconds.

He won the 25th anniversary race with a total time of 7 hours, 51 minutes, 55 seconds. Okinawan Kanji Kuwahara of Tomigusuku City claimed third, finishing 7 minutes, 3 seconds behind the Australian. The triathlon involves racers working their way through a three-kilometer swim, a 155 kilometers bicycle ride, followed by a 42.195 kilometer full marathon.

A Ukranian woman, Tamara Kozlina, was the ladies champion with a time of 8 hours, 42 minutes, 16 seconds. Emi Shioya of Tokyo was second with a time of 8 hours, 58 minutes, 54 seconds.

Anderson was participating in his second Miyakojima All Japan Strongman Triathlon. He placed second his first time out, in 2004. His skills on the bicycle carried him, as did the run. He placed only 13th in the swim.

A total of 1,441 men and 202 women participated in this year’s triathlon. Organizers say 1,316 completed the grueling event.
