Raptors head home after Okinawa tour

Date Posted: 2009-04-23

A dozen American stealth fighters wrapped up their three-month deployment to Okinawa Sunday, heading home to Virginia.

Six F-22A Raptors departed Kadena Air Base on Sunday, heading to Langley Air Force Base in Virginia after completing a mission supporting U.S. Pacific Command. The other six Langley-based F-22A Raptorís left Kadena on Monday.

The stealth fighters had participated in joint exercises with both U.S. Air Force Kadena-based F-15 fighters, as well as Japanese Air Self Defense Force F-15ís. The F-22ís arrived in January, a little less than their first deployment to Okinawa in 2007. The Raptor, which is replacing the F-15, is a sophisticated stealth aircraft that cruises at supersonic speed while avoiding enemy detection.
