Servicemen’s car takes plunge in Itoman Port

Date Posted: 2002-10-04

A car with two U.S. servicemen inside plunged into ocean at Itoman fishing port in Nishizaki, Itoman City, Sunday. The men escaped without injury but the car sank. According to Itoman Police, many people had gathered at the port for moon viewing parties, and the Americans were driving around the area in their car. When they were on the pier, their car suddenly lurched forward and jumped over the edge. The car crashed into a cruiser that was moored at the port and then lunged into the water and sank. The boat suffered damage, but stayed afloat.

The two men in the car escaped through its open windows and swam the short distance and climbed on the pier. They then walked to the nearest police station to report the incident. The police described the driver as a 19-year-old serviceman stationed on Kadena Air Base and the other man as an American serviceman stationed on another base.
