Posh hotel slated for 2012 in downtown Naha

Date Posted: 2009-04-15

Kanehide Group is banking on an economic upswing that will keep the affluent and retired segments of the community in good stead, announcing plans this week for a luxury hotel to be built in the Asahibashi district in the heart of Naha City.

“Asahibashi is the entrance to Naha City and Okinawa Prefecture both,” says Kanehide Chairman Shunsho Goya, “and retired and well-to-do people are sure loving to visit Okinawa and we are the ones to meet their expectations.” Kanehide Group will own the plush hotel, but has contracted with Royal Hotels to manage and operate the hotel with 152 rooms and five suites. Royal Hotels President Hajime Kawagoe says “the staff and directors and officials are coming from the Royal Hotels side, but we’ll have an Okinawan staff and use Okinawan ingredients for the foods.”

Kawagoe says the new hotel is part of the “League Royal Hotel” group, which is developing hotels in Tokyo, Osaka and 10 other cities. He says “we’ve made a good relationship with the Kanehide staff.” The new Asahibashi Royal Hotel will be in the southern part of the reform development area, the current site of the south union prefecture office.

Construction will begin in December, with the first through fifth floors assigned to the Prefecture Labor Bank, with the hotel occupying the 6th through 14th floors. The twin rooms are 35 square meters with three beds. Sixty rooms will have an ocean view. Kanehide and Royal Hotels say one night at the new hotel will be ¥25,000 and up for a twin.
