Naha flights affected as ANA pilots strike

Date Posted: 2009-04-15

Dozens of All Nippon Airways flights are being canceled today as its pilots launched a one-day strike this morning.

ANA says it expects to cancel 149 domestic flights today, including flights on the Naha-Miyako and Fukuoka-Osaka/Itami routes. An estimated 6,000 passengers will feel the impact of the cancellations. An ANA official says no international flights are involved in the strike, which pilots say they’ll adhere to until midnight tonight.

The approximately 600 pilots involved belong to four labor unions. They’ve chosen to strike, they say, because of inadequate responses from ANA management on a variety of issues, including demands on safety.

ANA says they do not expect the pilots to extend their strike beyond today.
