More than a dozen performers have already signed on for the upcoming Japan Reggae Festival 2009 Okinawa, which organizers promise to be an eight-hour non-stop musical extravaganza.

Advance tickets for the April 25th festival are on sale now at Okinawa Market on Chuo Park Avenue in Okinawa City. Advance tickets are only ¥5,800, compared with ¥7,000 at the Okinawa Kaihin Park venue on the day of the event. Okinawa Market is accepting dollars at the current day’s exchange rate, yen and major credit cards.

Japan Update will raffle away four free tickets to the event. To participate, e-mail to editor@japanupdate.com by 5 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 13. The four lucky winner will be notified by e-mail and also posted on www.japanupdate.com website on Monday.

Doors open at the venue at 2 p.m. the 25th, with the show getting under way at 3 p.m.

Sponsored by Tower Records, the ninth annual Reggae Festival has already attracted a dozen of the region’s hottest stars, including Home Grown, U-Dou & Platy, Ryo the Skywalker, New Man and God Making. Also to perform are Sister Mayumi, Pushim, King Ryukyu, Rudebwoy Face and Jumbo Match, and Takafin Boxer Kid from MJR. Several of the artists, including Home Grown, King Ryukyu, Pushim and U-Dou Platy were stars of last year’s event returning for the latest festival.

Reggae’s tempo and beat are built around heavy use of drums, bass guitars and keyboards. A unique element of reggae is its ability to approach just about any music genre and adapt it to reggae style. Reggae’s roots are steeped in Caribbean and African music, American rhythm and blues, and Jamaican ska. Bob Marley first brought popularity to the musical form, followed by the Rastafari movement that brought the reggae sound into prominence in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
