World’s second largest aquarium to open in Motobu

The new pride of the Okinawa Ocean Expo Park in Motobu, the largest aquarium in the Far East and the second largest in the world, is one month away from its grand opening to the public on Nov. 1. The pre-opening ceremony for 400 invited guests was held on Sep. 28. The aquarium is home to 650 different species of fish, including four whale sharks and five manta rays. The total number of fish in the facility is 60,000.

Fish in the main tank can be viewed through a 60cm thick acrylic panel that it the largest of its kind in the world. All coral is alive, and a new feature is an “Experience Corner” where visitors can actually touch corals and other live sea animals.

The aquarium is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, seven days a week. The admission is ¥1,800 for adults, ¥1,200 for high school and ¥600 for elementary and junior high school students.
