Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders to visit Okinawa on Monday

Date Posted: 2009-04-10

One of the best known cheerleading squads in the National Football League, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, will spend the day Monday on Okinawa, visiting, shaking hands, getting their pictures taken, and performing.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will be at the BeachHead on Camp Schwab from 9:30 ~ 10:30 a.m., followed by the Palms on Camp Hansen from 11:30 a.m. ~ 12:15 p.m. The cheerleaders will stage a live performance at the Camp Kinser gymnasium at 8 p.m. Monday. Gym doors open at 7 p.m. in this free event open to all SOFA status personnel.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders first made their appearance on the sidelines in 1972 after Cowboys manager Tex Schramm decided to improve upon the image of an earlier group of cheerleaders known as the CowBelles & Beaux, a male-female squad. Schramm wound up choosing dancers, who he had work with choreographers to create routines for use throughout games.

The cheerleaders have extended their routines well beyond the 100 yards of the football field, appearing on television programs, participating in Dallas Cowboys promotions, and traveling to military bases around the world to meet U.S. service personnel. This trip is sponsored by Marine Corps Community Services and American Airlines.
