Counterfeit $20 bills again circulate on Okinawa streets

Date Posted: 2009-04-09

A Gate 2 Street bar owner called police this week to report a problem thought to have been solved; he had received a phony $20 bill from a customer.

A foreigner brought this money and paid for his drinks with this one, he told police as he showed them the fake $20 bill. When the bar owner checked his cash register, he found another counterfeit $20. Bar staff describe the foreigner as 165cm tall, wearing a parka and jeans. The man was accompanied by another white man; both fled when the bar owner telephoned police.

The counterfeit bills were described as darker than real $20 bills, and lacking transparency. Police had thought the individuals who produced and circulated counterfeit $20 bills more than a year ago had all been caught and punished.
