Largest shopping mall in Okinawa opens

Date Posted: 2002-10-04

The largest shopping mall in the prefecture named “Naha Main Place” opened in Omoromachi, Naha City, Tuesday. The giant mall, located in the fastest developing section of the city, employs 500 people not counting the tenants that number 70. It has parking for 2,400 cars and is open from 10 a.m. to midnight. San-A officials expect the giant to generate ¥18 billion in sales per year.

Originally, San-A was in hot competition with Daiei chain for the right to build the complex. However, Daiei dropped from the contest and subsequently announced the closure of most of its department stores and shopping centers in Okinawa as a part of a nation-wide rehabilitation plan.
