Onna landowners unite; choose Malaysian hotel-resort operator

Date Posted: 2009-04-02

Berjaya Land Company, an overseas development company from Malaysia that operates Resort Hotel Four Seasons, has been chosen by Onna landowners to build a hotel on their property.

The landowners own the former American Onna Telecommunications site, returned by the U.S. military in 1995 but stymied by PCB pollution and mercury that prevented development until recent years. They built the Okinawa Tropical Measure Technique Center on the site in 2001, but decided in an emergency general meeting over the weekend that they wanted to bring in a resort hotel.

More than 100 land owners turned out to cast their votes on a contract to lease 49 hectares of land, with Berjaya Land Company to build two hotels with a total of 600 rooms on the site within five years. The contract between Onna landowners and Berjaya was to have been completed yesterday.
