Sunfish finds way into Motobu’s Manna River

Date Posted: 2009-03-26

A sunfish lost its way this week, apparently riding the waves from the ocean into the Manna River in Motobu Town’s Toguchi area.

Maritime officials rescued the sunfish, which has a very special fin called rudder fins, and transported it to Churaumi Aquarium. The sunfish normally lives in very warm tropical ocean waters, and never approaches the shoreline. Officials say this sunfish is 182cm long, and weighs 150 kilograms.

An aquarium official says “the day before the fish came into the river, there was a strong wind blowing from the northern part of the ocean, and waves were very high.” He said the sunfish drifted with high waves and was pushed into the river. “It could be, but we’ll never know for sure,” he added. The sunfish will now join the permanent population at Churaumi Aquarium, where it will soon go on exhibition for visitors.
