Subsidized ETC devices popular; almost sold out

Date Posted: 2009-03-26

The Okinawa Expressway System’s Electronic Toll Collection is gaining popularity ahead of their price subsidy deadline of Mar 31, and sales of the ETC devices have just about depleted supplies of the units, which are now being sold at subsidized prices.

Shops selling and installing the ETC devices say they’re about sold out, as many drivers have been flocking to their businesses to purchase the units to take advantage of expressway toll savings and subsidised prices. There are 50 shops selling the devices on Okinawa.

“With the ¥5,250 subsidy, the cost of an ETC drops to about ¥9.000,” says a store owner, but he warns “we are running out of the devices.” The ETC system must be installed in a vehicle in order for drivers to be able to roll through the special toll lanes and get the discount toll fees.
