Iheya Village residents taking their mayor to courtDate Posted: 2009-03-26 The suit stems from a 2008 court ruling that mayor Shinsuke Nishime was responsible for making a personal contract with a waste disposal company to construct a facility for Iheya Village. The mayor made the move despite Iheya Village’s having issued a contract to another vendor to install the incinerator. That Tokyo vendor sued, and the court awarded ¥140 million in damages. “I can’t say anything yet, before I see the court papers,” says Mayor Nishime. Village residents representative Masao Irei is leading the group of seven residents who’ve filed the lawsuit, which charges Nishime with malpractice in violating the village decision. Iheya Village is facing bankruptcy because it says it cannot come up with the money to pay the vendor it had initially awarded a contract to. |
