MOFA, Marine Corps to hold cultural awareness seminar

Marine Corps Bases Japan and the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Liaison Office are holding a cultural awareness seminar at the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma gymnasium from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, March 27.

The purpose of this seminar is to provide an opportunity for Status of Forces Agreement personnel to learn about the Okinawan culture and spirit through martial arts, specifically Okinawan kobudo. The seminar is an initiative of the Cooperative Working Team, comprised of representatives of the Government of Japan, local government leaders, U.S. Department of State officials, and representatives of all U.S. military services working toward prevention of incidents and accidents on Okinawa.

During this seminar, Master Masahiro Nakamoto, the chairman of the Okinawa Traditional Kobudo Preservation Society Headquarters (Bunbukan), will demonstrate nunchaku techniques and kobudo tactics to Marines before they conduct a hands-on class.
