Expressway fees to be slashed for ETC drivers

Date Posted: 2009-03-19

Okinawa is joining the West Japan Expressway in cutting toll fees 30~50%, but only for ETC cars.

The new tolls go into effect March 28th, reducing fees 30% 9 a.m. ~ 5 p.m. for cars registered with ETC. ETC drivers on weekends and national holidays will see a 50% cut in toll fees. The Naha IC to Kyoda IC fee, now 1,000, will drop to 500 on weekends and holidays. Officials emphasize the new fares are for ETC registered cars only, and that the discounted fee applies only twice each day.

Okinawa is using its Okinawa Promotion Special Regulation fund to cover the new, discounted toll fees. Officials say they opted to give the discount only to ETC-equipped cars because the Prefecture is promoting use of the ETC system. Applying the discounts to ETC-registered vehicles gives the government enough money to run the program through 2011. An official said there would have been only enough money to carry into 2010 if the discounts had been applied to all expressway drivers.
