Awase Club Champion scores pair of aces in single round

Date Posted: 2009-03-19

When the 2008 Awase Meadows Golf Course Club Champion, Chris Howard, woke up on Saturday, March 7th, he had no idea what the day had in store for him. He got up, skipped breakfast as usual (too much sugar messes with his game), and showed up at Awase Meadows G.C. an hour early with partner Scott Satterlee to warm up for the 2-Person Mixed Format Tournament. Hours later, he beat 67 million to one odds by hitting not just one, but two holes-in-one.

That’s right, a pair of aces. The odds of hitting a single hole-in-one for average golfers are one in 12,000, and pulling off this first-ever occurrence at Awase Meadows G.C. was certainly no easy feat for the avid golfer that rainy day. “The wind was blowing into our face. You didn’t know what your ball would do,” Howard says. “I figured I’d get it as close to the hole as I could and try to score a birdie for the team.”

Howard did much more than that. Using a Callaway driver, he made his first hole-in-one on the par-4 12th hole, followed just a few holes later by his second ace of the round on the par-3 9th hole using a Bridgestone 6-iron. “The ball hit the green then made a four-foot bend and disappeared,” he recalled of his first ace. “One of my friends said, ‘there’s a good possibility that made it in,’ but on a par 4, I had a lot of doubt.” Sure enough, his Bridgestone E6+ found a comfortable resting spot in the 12th hole.

His accomplishments paid off as Awase Meadows G.C. and United Airlines awarded him two roundtrip tickets to the U.S. He also received a new Mizuno driver and a $250 merchandise certificate at the course pro shop. Howard attributes much of his success to luck. “I was in the right place at the right time,” he says. “There is some skill involved, but at some point luck takes over.”

Howard and Satterlee finished the round at five under, winning the tournament.
