Golden Kings split pair with visiting Saitama

Date Posted: 2009-03-12

The Ryukyu Golden Kings capitalized on strong play by Anthony McHenry to take a relatively easy 63-54 Saturday win over the Saitama Broncos, but fell a day later in inter-division play.

McHenry scored 15, plus hauled in 13 rebounds, made two steals and four blocks in the win, outscoring the Broncos 27-10 in the third stanza. It was a different story Sunday, though, as Saitama sent Okinawa reeling 84-66. The Golden Kings are now 29-9, while the Broncos’ strong play moved the squad within one game of the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Elsewhere, the Sendai 89ers rolled to a pair of weekend wins over the Takamatsu Five Arrows, picking up a Saturday road win 102-96, and locking thins up Sunday 90-75. The Osaka Evessa shined in front of the home crowd over the weekend, defeating the Toyama Grouses 105-92 and 94-87. Lynn Washington paced the Evessa both games, scoring 24 points Saturday and another 36 on Sunday.

The Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix slammed the hapless Oita HeatDevils this week, racking up a 96-65 road win on Saturday and another blowout, 98-66, on Sunday. Michael Gardener scored 28 in Saturday’s rout, then came back with another impressive 39 points to lead the Phoenix to a 27-12 record. The Rizing Fukuoka split a weekend road series with the Niigata Albirex BB. Rizing Fukuoka slid past Niigata 79-69 on Saturday, then fell 86-68 a day later behind the shooting and rebounding of Dokun Akinbade who scored 16 and pulled in another 21 rebounds.

The Tokyo Apache had a tough mid-week series, splitting the pair with the Shiga Lakestars. Tokyo bounced back from losses a weekend earlier to claim a Thursday 92-82 win in the Komazawa Gymnazium in boosting its record to 24-13. A day later the Lakestars were all over the court, pushing the game into overtime before emerging victorious. Shiga, one of the league’s expansion teams struggling to be a spoiler, improved its record to 14-24 with the 85-77 overtime win.
