Naha City ups garbage disposal fees for businesses

Date Posted: 2003-09-27

Naha City Waste Disposal Measure Committee has decided to increase the fee the city charges to businesses for garbage disposal. The current fee of 40 per 10 kg will be hiked to 60/10 kg. Naha City Mayor Takeshi Onaga has already approved the increase and it will take effect from March 2004.

The fee the city charges only to businesses has been unchanged since its introduction in 2001. City officials say that it currently costs the city 125 per 10 kg to dispose of the garbage, and that makes it necessary to hike the fee. They also say that they plan to hike the price by 20 per 10 kg every two years until the fee matches the cost.

Garbage disposal for households in Naha City remains free, but there is a charge of 190 each for large or bulky items to be disposed of. There are stickers available at supermarkets, convenience stores or city offices that must be pasted on such items before disposal. At the same time, city officials are campaigning hard to make people aware of ways of reducing their waste and recycling.
