Municipalities ready to dole out subsidy monies

Date Posted: 2009-03-12

Men, women and children across Okinawa will begin receiving special national government subsidy funds over the next several months.

Kunigami Village and Yonaguni Town are jumping to the forefront, saying they’ll make the payments to citizens starting this month. Children under 18 and senior citizens 70 years of age or older will receive ¥20,000, while all other citizens, including permanent foreign residents, are to receive ¥12,000.

Naha, Urasoe, Ginown, Nago and Nanjo cities, Kadena, Motobu, Kin, Yonabaru, Kume and Taketomi towns, and Ogimi, Higashi, Onna, Ginoza, Ie and Tarama villages are going to dispense the funds in April. Okinawa, Itoman, Tomigusuku, Miyakojima, Ishigaki cities, Chatan, Nishihara and haebaru towns, Nakijin, Yomitan, Kitanakagusuku, Nakagusuku, Tokashiki, Zamami, Iheya and Izena villages are in line for May.

Most municipalities say they’ll make the special grant payments by bank transfer, but several others say they’ll make payments in cash. Others, including Kadena Town, say they’ll use gift coupons instead of cash, with the gift coupons valued at 10% more than the actual government grant money.
