Man arrested after torching woman with spray paint

Date Posted: 2009-02-26

An unemployed man is under arrest after he sprayed paint onto a store clerk’s face, then took a lighter from his pocket and set her ablaze.

The woman, a worker at a customer service counter on the sixth floor of a Kokusai Street business, was able to cover her face with her arm, but the flames burned her arm. She was able to extinguish the flames before suffering further injuries.

The 31-year-old culprit fled the scene, but was chased by a security guard and then captured by a customer who witnessed the crime. Kazuya Mawashi told police “I got too much stress, and I lost my job. I have no hope in the future, so I wanted to do something bad.” Mawashi, who is from Nanjo City, says he didn’t know the clerk, but “anyone would do”. He said he “just wanted to do something.” He did that, police wryly noted, and now Mawashi is under arrest and in jail.
