Sango tunnel in Nago City opens for traffic

Date Posted: 2003-09-27

A 196-meter-long tunnel that is a part of a shortcut under construction on Route 18 opened for traffic Thursday. The new shortcut will connect Agarie in Nago City to Oura on the east coast of the island. The shortcut is scheduled to be complete in 2006 when the last bridge will be finished. The road construction project has been underway since 1988. The current Route 18 is very narrow and with steep curves. The original road is mostly one lane, but once the project is finished it will have two full lanes. The new road will be 8.5 kilometers long once completed. With the opening of the tunnel this week, 4.9 kilometers of the new roadway is now in use.
