Date Posted: 2009-02-12

Jeff Newton, Anthony McHenry and Shigeyuki Kinjo are becoming household words on Okinawa as they led the Ryukyu Golden Kings, the Japan Basketball League’s Western Conference leader to twin wins over the hapless Rizing Fukuoka.

A McHenry three-pointer with only 37 seconds left in overtime gave the Okinawa squad an 81-80 win Saturday, then pounded Rizing Fukuoka 87-73 on Sunday as they stretched their season record to 24-6. Fukuoka is 0-6 against the Golden Kings this season. Newton racked up 36 points and 28 rebounds in the two contests, while Kinjo scored 39 points including a team-best 22 in Saturday’s squeaker.

Elsewhere, the Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix 10-game win streak snapped Saturday as the Sendai 89ers rolled to an 88-79 win.

Undaunted, the Phoenix roared back with an 81-79 victory over Sendai on Sunday. The Takamatsu Five Arrows scored a pair of wins from the Oita HeatDevils, victorious 83-79 on the road in the first weekend game, and 95-82 on Sunday. The wins boost the Five Arrows record to 21-9.

The Osaka Evessa split a pair with the Shiga Lakestars, winning 82-69 on the road Sunday after being hit with an 84-78 loss a day earlier. The Toyama Grouses made the home fans happy last weekend, winning twice over the Saitama Broncos, 76-70 in Saturday’s contest and 86-83 on Sunday.
