Okinawans welcome stylish sumo wrestler Asashoryu

Date Posted: 2009-02-05

Grand Champion sumo wrestler Asashoryu is on top of the sport, but the Mongolian wrestler has heads shaking about his controversial style and demeanor.

Asashoryu has been seen as violating traditional rules, manners and customs established for sumo wrestlers, leading the Sumo Association Commissioners to headaches. One commissioner, referring to Asashoryu’s victory pose that included raising his clenched fists over his head, said “that’s not good style for a Grand Champion.”

Okinawans have embraced Asashoryu and his style, saying “his victory pose is just right for a champion, and should be done like that.” “This generation is the generation of change involving many changes, and not just in the sport world,” declares another Okinawan”. Okinawans are telling sumo traditionalists to relax, “it’s just a pose of victory.” They’re encouraging the Sumo Association Commissioners to look both ways, and not listen only to the strict traditionalists.
