Endurance leads Uruma City to long distance relay race win

Date Posted: 2009-02-04

It was a grueling two-day race as teams from 14 municipalities wound their way across a 295.4 kilometer course across Okinawa, and when the sweat was wiped from brows, Uruma City took top honors by edging Kunigami Village by only five minutes.

The weekend race pitted the 14 communities in a 28-relay section competition sponsored by the Okinawa Track and Field Association, Okinawa Prefecture Board of Education and Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper company. From the Onoyama Park starting line in Naha City to the Hentona first-day finish line in Kunigami Village, it was a challenge. All 14 teams finished the 165.5 kilometers to Kunigami Village Saturday, then made the return trek via a different route on Sunday.

Uruma City, which unseated four-time champion Kunigami Village a year ago, again claimed the win with a time of 16 hours, 48 minutes, 41 seconds, five minutes and one second ahead of Kunigami Village. The yaeyama Group took third in 17 hours, 5 minutes 33 seconds.

Nago City was fourth, Shimajiri County fifth, and Nanjo City sixth. Nakigami County captured 7th place, Naha City 8th, Miyakojima City 9th place and Ginowan City 10th. Okinawa City wound up in 11th place, Urasoe City 12th, Tomishiro City 13th and Itoman City rounding out the race in 14th place.
