Challengers press Gima in Urasoe mayoral election

Urasoe City Mayor Mitsuo Gima takes eight years experience on behalf of his community to the polls Sunday as he faces two challengers in the mayoral election.

The 65-year-old Gima, seeking his third term, has campaigned on how his work style has built community power for the 39 communities within Urasoe City, and has called for further uniting to increase the city’s ability to face economic and development circumstances. His two challengers see Urasoe City’s future somewhat differently from Gima.

Candidate Minoru Higa, former president of Tropical technology Center, is campaigning on a slogan of improving child care. The 65-year-old independent is a strong proponent of west coast seashore work, and is advocating development proceed rapidly.

Communist Party candidate Morinobu Nishihira, on the other hand, is totally opposed to starting west coast seaside development, calling reclamation “very bad and a waste of money.” The youngest of the three at 58, Nishihira has campaigned for reducing medical and health costs to citizens, while increasing employment.
